Christmas Around the World Mini Series, Ep 02
Christmas in Alicantewith Mar Lozano
Today, I’m welcoming Mar from the Alicante region of Spain to the podcast. Mar comes from a super traditional small town in Spain, just a 15 minute drive from the coast, where you could even visit the beach on a typical balmy Christmas Day. One of the most fascinating parts of this interview is the contrast between the traditions of this very small Catholic town and the way that Mar’s family, who are not at all religious, celebrated Christmas. And this same theme – traditional vs. very progressive – plays out in all the foods Mar’s family eats on and around Christmas as well. On the one hand, she one of the most famous and most-searched recipes from Spain, a soft almond nougat, and on the other hand, she’s cooked an entirely Vegan Christmas feast for her family one year. This episode is the perfect example of what I love most about this podcast – while we can always learn about culture from one person, we are constantly reminded that every single family and individual in each culture have their OWN stories to tell.
So here’s Mar with her stories of Christmas in Alicante, Spain.
About the Christmas Around the World Podcast Mini SeriesWelcome back to the Christmas Around the World Series in conjunction with the Christmas Desserts Around the World post. Christmas Desserts Around the World is crowdsourced by over 20 members of The Storied Recipe Community.
As people shared their cherished Christmas recipes and the memories surrounding them, I really wanted to hear MORE – so I decided to expand on a few of these with a little mini series about Christmas traditions all around the world. This year, I have 5 episodes in the series – Mai from Palestine, Kate from South Africa, Claire Marie from France, Mar from the Alicante region of Spain, and Alexandra from Norway.
I really hope you listen to them all – and I hope to add more next year!!
